First Half Recap

With the Drexel Roller Hockey Club teams going on winter break and out of action until early January, here is an update for the end of the first half of the year.

Our A/B teams had one last tournament to end the half last weekend, playing games on Saturday December 6th in Broomall, PA. The A team had a strong showing, going 2-1 against some tough competition while the B team lost both games, ending its undefeated start. The 7-0-1 start was the longest undefeated regular season run the B team has had in the team’s history in the ECRHA. It was the second longest undefeated run since the B team opened the 2006-2007 season with a 9-0 record (including 3 exhibition games) before losing their first game to Towson, 6-4. The 7-0-1 start is better than the 6-0-0 regular season start in 2006-2007. The B team’s record is now 7-2-1.

A Team (ECRHA Division II) Scores:

Drexel 2 West Chester 4 – Loss

Drexel 9 Ramapo 0 – Win

Drexel 8 Temple 5 – Win

B Team (ECRHA B Division) Scores:

Drexel 2 West Chester 5 – Loss

Drexel 3 Temple 4 – Loss

A team Stats Leaders:

Senior Andrew Nguyen ranks fifth in the league in points (30 points in 11 games) and ranks third in the league and fifth in the country in assists (18 in 11 games). This is his fifth and final season with the club. He has played on the A team all five years.

Pre-Junior Chris Adams, playing his third season with the club and second on the A team, is third in the league and eighth in the country in goals (21 in 11 games).

Impressive freshman rookie goalie Steve Stewart ranks fifth in the league in wins (6), fifth in the league and in the country in saves (266), and third in the league in save percentage (88%).

B Team Stats Leaders:

Freshman rookie John Kundrat has impressed thus far the season. He ranks fifth in the league in assists (12 in 10 games). He has also scored 23 points in 10 games. Other players who have scored more than a point per game: freshman rookie Erl Hem; sophomore Ian McEwing; Pre-Junior Artie Woods.

Senior goaltender Kevin Appel ranks second in the league and third in the country in wins (6), fifth in the league in saves (189), and fourth in the league in goals against average (2.75).

Our C and D teams have also concluded play until winter break is over.

Our C team enters the break with a 3-1-0 record. Their only loss came from the undefeated St. Joseph’s University team, 2 weeks ago. The score was 4-2. Last week, the C team also beat Neumann College by a score of 5-1. It marked the first time any Drexel team (PCRHL or ECRHA) has beat a Neumann team since the 2004-2005 PCRHL Tier I playoffs, in which Drexel’s first Tier I team won the PCRHL championship.

The team has seen strong play from newcomer Pete Psyrris, who has notched over a point a game. Returning players Kyle Defelice, DJ Gialanella, and Al Borelli have all also scored more than a point per game. 5th year senior Jimmy Heis, playing his third year in goal, ranks in the top five in the league in goals against average (4.00), save percentage (86%), and wins (3).

Our D team continues to play hard despite facing some adversity early on. After losing the first two games of the season, the team notched its first win against Widener University’s White team two weeks ago, winning 5-2. However, they were set back last week when they lost to Cabrini College, 8-5. Our C team’s record stands at 1-3-0 going into the break.

A positive note to start the season is the play of sophomore rookie goalie Tejas Patel who ranks in the top 5 in goals against average (5.00) and save percentage (83%).
