Present Status
Currently, the DURHC is host to three or four collegiate roller hockey teams, making us the largest club sport on Drexel’s campus. With three or four teams each year, carrying ten to twelve players a team, that gives us nearly thirty-five to fifty active members during the college roller hockey seasons. In order to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to play at a level on par with their skills our four teams are spread across two leagues in four divisions of play. Each year, we hold a preseason meeting (announced via email and on this website) at the end of the first week of classes. We hold tryouts during the second weekend of classes. No players are guaranteed a spot on any team, but every player is guaranteed a chance to least practice with us, so that they can earn a playing roster spot the following season.
Our top team plays Division 1 in the Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association, which is a region of the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association. You can find out more about these leagues by clicking the respective links. Our B team plays in the B Division of the ECRHA, with the opportunity to makes NCRHA B Division Nationals every year. The B team also competes in the Philadelphia Collegiate Roller Hockey League, mentioned in our club history. The PCRHL is now run by Drexel Graduate Brian Smith. In the 2002-2003 season our B team won the PCRHL championships.
Our C and D teams also compete in the PCRHL. Due to the number of interested players and schools in the Philadelphia area, the PCRHL split into two tiers for the 2003-2004 season. Our C team competes in Tier 1, which means they will play against or B team during the course of the season. This is always a fun contest to see. The D team competes in Tier 2, against second and third teams from other local colleges. Drexel is the only school to roster four teams.
While all of our teams are competitive in their respective divisions, we consider the A and B teams to be competitive in nature, as they represent the school on a larger stage. While A and B are officially competitive, this does not mean that C and D are purely recreational by any means. Our C and D teams practice once or twice a week, and are lead by paid coaches, just like our A and B teams. Having this number of players in our club gives us a great format for players to develop and reach their goals as a roller hockey player, which helps the club reach its goals. During any given season, a number of players will be called up from D to C, C to B, B to A to fill in for injuries etc.
As one of the largest club sports on campus, and largest clubs in the country, it costs a lot of money to keep us practicing and traveling like we do. Drexel University provided over forty thousand dollars to us for the 2004-2005 school years. This funding in combination with players dues ranging from $300-$400 per season provide us the things we need to operate, including: rink time, coaches pay, hotel costs, travel costs, matching helmets for our competitive teams, pucks and water bottles. Uniforms are purchased by the players so that they can retain their uniforms when they graduate.
All teams in the club wear the same uniform to keep our uniform costs as low as possible. This also ensures that all players can move up and down teams during the season. Our current uniform set costs between $150-$200. It is now the ‘new’ roller hockey style uniform with custom made jerseys and roller hockey pants by Ace Jerseys, crested with each players number and the Drexel Dragon on our jerseys and pants.
